JOIN THE TEAM
Every fitness level is welcome, from first-time runners to athletes from every other sport. In cross country, nobody sits on a bench. Every eligible athlete races. Multi-sport athletes: fall aerobic training can support your other sport.
HOW TO GET STARTED
1. Email Coach Young to let him know you're interested.
2. Get a sports physical. The Physical Form is on the LWHS athletics documents page.
3. Register through Arbiter. Create one Arbiter Registration account per family and activate it from the email link (check your junk folder). Then log in and use the registration link or QR code on the LWHS Arbiter page to register for Cross Country or Track & Field and upload the physical. All waivers are signed digitally. Arbiter support: registration@arbitersports.com or 800-311-4060.
4. Wait for clearance. Students must be registered and cleared to be eligible to participate. The confirmation email is not clearance. Until an athlete is cleared, they can watch practice but can't train, lift, or race.
5. Join the team's SportsYou group, the team's main communication hub. Both the athlete and at least one parent should join. Coach Young shares access directly with registered families.
6. Join the Lake Wylie Chargers XC club on Strava to log training miles.
A WEEK IN SEASON
Team practices run Monday through Thursday at Allison Creek Park and Lake Wylie High School, with early-morning weight training on Tuesday and Thursday for cleared athletes. Friday is an optional shakeout, Saturday is race day or the long run, and Sunday is recovery. Allison Creek Park checks IDs at the gate, so bring a school ID or license. Entry is free for York County residents. SportsYou always has the latest practice details.
WHAT TO BRING
Properly fitted running shoes and a filled water bottle at every practice, plus moisture-wicking clothes and weather-appropriate layers. Race uniforms are issued by the program and returned at the end of the season. If cost is ever a barrier, contact Coach Young privately. No Charger misses a season over money.
